Bachchor Hannover
Im Jahr 1125 wurde vermutlich die erste, damals romanische Kirche an der Stelle errichtet, an der heute die Marktkirche steht. Der Bachchor Hannover ist nur unwesentlich jünger: Bereits 1441 wird an der Marktkirche ein Chor erwähnt, der liturgische Aufgaben übernahm. Dieser entwickelte sich 1856 zu einem gemischten Oratorienchor und erhielt 1945 den Namen „Bachchor“.
Wenn die Marktkirche eines der wichtigsten sichtbaren Wahrzeichen der Stadt ist, könnte man den Bachchor als eines der bedeutendsten hörbaren Wahrzeichen Hannovers bezeichnen. Sein Namensgeber Gustav Sasse leitete den Chor von 1945 bis 1967, gefolgt von Manfred Brandstetter (1967 bis 1986). Unter der Leitung von Jörg Straube (1986 bis 2024) entwickelte sich der Chor zu einem der führenden Konzertchöre Norddeutschlands; das Repertoire wurde deutlich erweitert und umfasst heute die geistliche Musik vom 16. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert. Konzertreisen führten den Bachchor in zahlreiche Länder Europas. Für die CD „Glaubenslieder“ wurde der Chor 2010 mit dem Echo Klassik ausgezeichnet. Im Jahr 2024 übernahm Christian Rohrbach die künstlerische Leitung.
Dem Chor gehören heute mehr als 100 Sänger:innen aus ganz Niedersachsen an. Nahezu alle sind Amateure, einige sind dem Chor schon seit mehreren Jahrzehnten treu. Das hohe Niveau des Klangkörpers wird nicht nur durch die wöchentlichen Proben gesichert, jede neue Stimme wird zudem in Form eines Vorsingens auf musikalisches Verständnis und Stimmfarbe getestet, bevor sie dauerhaft mitsingen darf.
Die gemeinsam organisierte Kirchenmusik an der Marktkirche sorgt für stets junge Stimmen – im Kinder- und Jugendchor werden junge Menschen von Lisa Laage-Smidt ausgebildet. Im Bachchor können die Sänger:innen ihr Berufsleben verbringen. Die noch von Jörg Straube gegründete Kantorei St. Georg ist dann für begeisterte Musiker, die das Seniorenalter erreicht haben.
Der Bachchor hat sich insbesondere der Pflege und Aufführung der Werke Johann Sebastian Bachs verschrieben. In der Karwoche wird regelmäßig eine der Passionen aufgeführt. Das nahezu jährlich gesungene Weihnachtsoratorium im Dezember ist ein fester Bestandteil des städtischen Konzertkalenders.

In 1125, the first Romanesque church was probably built on the site where the Marktkirche stands today. The Bach Choir Hannover is only slightly younger: as early as 1441, a choir performing liturgical duties is mentioned at the Marktkirche. In 1856, this choir developed into a mixed oratorio choir and was given the name „Bach Choir“ in 1945.
If the Marktkirche is one of the city’s most important visible landmarks, the Bach Choir could be described as one of Hanover’s most significant audible landmarks. Its namesake, Gustav Sasse, conducted the choir from 1945 to 1967, followed by Manfred Brandstetter (1967 to 1986). Under the direction of Jörg Straube (1986 to 2024), the choir developed into one of the leading concert choirs in northern Germany; its repertoire was significantly expanded and now includes sacred music from the 16th to the 21st century. Concert tours have taken the Bach Choir to numerous European countries. In 2010, the choir was awarded the Echo Klassik for its CD ‘Glaubenslieder’ (Songs of Faith). In 2024, Christian Rohrbach took over as artistic director.
Today, the choir has more than 100 singers from all over Lower Saxony. Almost all of them are amateurs, and some have been loyal members of the choir for several decades. The high standard of the ensemble is ensured not only by weekly rehearsals, but also by auditions to test each new voice for musical understanding and tone colour before they are allowed to sing with the choir on a permanent basis.
The jointly organised church music at the Marktkirche ensures a constant supply of young voices – young people are trained by Lisa Laage-Smidt in the children’s and youth choir. Singers can spend their professional lives in the Bach Choir. The Kantorei St. Georg, founded by Jörg Straube, is for enthusiastic musicians who have reached senior age.
The Bach Choir is particularly dedicated to the preservation and performance of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. One of the Passions is regularly performed during Holy Week. The Christmas Oratorio, sung almost every year in December, is an integral part of the city’s concert calendar.
