Christian Rohrbach

Christian Rohrbach ist Dirigent, Countertenor und Liedpianist. Im Zentrum seiner Arbeit stehen lebendige, beseelte Interpretationen verschiedenster Genres und unterschiedlicher Stilistiken stets auf Grundlage einer fundierten Auseinandersetzung mit den historischen Quellen. Inspiriert wurde er durch die Zusammenarbeit mit zahlreichen Musiker-Größen wie etwa Andreas Scholl, Emma Kirkby, Masaaki Suzuki, Thomas Hengelbrock, Petra Müllejans, Michael Hofstetter, Konrad Junghänel, Frieder Bernius, Michael Schneider und Jörg Straube.

Seit Beginn des Kirchenjahres 2024/25 hat Christian Rohrbach das Amt des Kantors an der Marktkirche Hannover inne und leitet den Bachchor Hannover sowie die Kantorei St. Georg. Zudem ist er seit Jahresbeginn 2025 künstlerischer Leiter des traditionsreichen Cäcilienchores Frankfurt. In der Spielzeit 2024/25 war Christian Rohrbach als Musikalischer Leiter in der Produktion „Salon Strozzi“ am Staatstheater Wiesbaden zu erleben.

Als Dirigent und Chorleiter wirkte er in zahlreichen Opernproduktionen mit und war an bedeutenden deutschen Bühnen  und bei international renommierten Festivals engagiert, unter anderem an der Oper Frankfurt, der Oper Köln, den Staatstheatern Braunschweig, Mainz und Wiesbaden, bei den Schwetzinger SWR Festspielen, dem Rheingau Musik Festival, dem Festival Rhein-Vokal und den Wiesbadener Bachwochen. Dabei erstreckt sich sein Repertoire von Claudio Monteverdis Opern über die großen Mozart-Opern bis hin ins 21. Jahrhundert und enthält eine Fülle von Stücken des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade. Darüber hinaus verbindet ihn mit dem Rundfunkchor und der Chorakademie des WDR eine enge Zusammenarbeit.

Als gefragter Konzertsänger trat Christian Rohrbach unter anderem bei den Händelfestspielen in Göttingen und Halle sowie den Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspielen, den Telemanntagen Magdeburg und dem Heidelberger Frühling auf. Neben den großen Passionen und dem Kantatenwerk J. S. Bachs fühlt er sich dem Oratorienschaffen G. F. Händels besonders verbunden. Auf der Bühne war er sowohl in der Barock-Oper als auch im zeitgenössischen Musiktheater zu erleben.

An der Hochschule für Musik Mainz hat Christian Rohrbach eine Professur inne. Er lehrt als Korrepetitor in der Gesangsabteilung, leitet die Oratorienklasse und ist künstlerischer Mitarbeiter im Exzellenzstudiengang Barock Vokal. Zudem war er für sechs Semester Leiter des Hochschulchores und ist Träger des Gutenberg Lehrpreises des JGU Mainz für herausragende Leistungen in der Lehre.

Christian Rohrbach is a conductor, countertenor and song pianist. His work focuses on lively, soulful interpretations of a wide variety of genres and styles, always based on a thorough examination of historical sources. He has been inspired by collaborations with numerous musical greats such as Andreas Scholl, Emma Kirkby, Masaaki Suzuki, Thomas Hengelbrock, Petra Müllejans, Michael Hofstetter, Konrad Junghänel, Frieder Bernius, Michael Schneider and Jörg Straube.

Since the beginning of the 2024/25 church year, Christian Rohrbach has held the position of cantor at the Marktkirche Hannover and directs the Bachchor Hannover and the Kantorei St. Georg. In addition, he has been the artistic director of the traditional Cäcilienchor Frankfurt since the beginning of 2025. In the 2024/25 season, Christian Rohrbach was the musical director of the production „Salon Strozzi“ at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden.

As a conductor and choir director, he has participated in numerous opera productions and has been engaged at major German theatres and internationally renowned festivals, including the Frankfurt Opera, the Cologne Opera, the state theatres in Braunschweig, Mainz and Wiesbaden, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Rhein-Vokal Festival and the Wiesbaden Bach Weeks. His repertoire ranges from Claudio Monteverdi’s operas and the great Mozart operas to the 21st century and includes a wealth of 17th and 18th century pieces off the beaten track. He also works closely with the WDR Radio Choir and Choir Academy.

As a sought-after concert singer, Christian Rohrbach has performed at the Handel Festivals in Göttingen and Halle, the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, the Telemann Days in Magdeburg and the Heidelberg Spring Festival, among others. In addition to the great Passions and cantatas of J. S. Bach, he feels a particular affinity for the oratorios of G. F. Handel. He has appeared on stage in both Baroque opera and contemporary music theatre.

Christian Rohrbach holds a professorship at the Mainz University of Music. He teaches as an accompanist in the vocal department, heads the oratorio class and is an artistic collaborator in the Baroque Vocal Excellence programme. He was also director of the university choir for six semesters and is the recipient of the Gutenberg Teaching Award from JGU Mainz for outstanding achievements in teaching.

Jörg Straube (ehemaliger Chorleiter bis November 2024)

Unermüdlich und voller Energie feilte Jörg Straube am musikalischen Profil des Bachchors und schaffte damit immer wieder besondere musikalische Momente für Publikum und Musizierende. 38 Jahre lang prägte er als Dirigent den Chor.

Jörg Straube studierte in Bremen und Hannover Schul- und Kirchenmusik. Schnell zeigte sich seine Passion für den Dirigentenberuf. 1974 begann er seine kirchenmusikalische Arbeit in Hannover. Er  gründete 1981 den Norddeutschen Figuralchor; 1983 wurde ihm das Niedersächsische Künstlerstipendium verliehen. Die Leitung des Bachchors Hannover trat er 1986 an.

Er war Professor an der Hochschule für Musik, Würzburg sowie Gastdirigent bei den Chören des NDR, des RIAS Berlin, des SWR und des Rundfunkchors Berlin. Viele Jahre war Jörg Straube Leiter des Landesjugendchores Niedersachen, dem er heute als künstlerischer Leiter beratend zur Seite steht.

Jörg Straube konnte mit seinen Ensembles zahlreiche Preise bei nationalen und internationalen Chorwettbewerben gewinnen. Seine Einspielungen mit dem Norddeutschen Figuralchor wurden mehrfach mit Schallplattenpreisen ausgezeichnet. Mit dem Bachchor gewann er 2010 den Echo Klassik.

Tireless and full of energy, Jörg Straube honed the musical profile of the Bach Choir, repeatedly creating special musical moments for audiences and musicians alike. He shaped the choir as its conductor for 38 years.

Jörg Straube studied school and church music in Bremen and Hanover. His passion for conducting quickly became apparent. In 1974, he began his work in church music in Hanover. He founded the North German Figural Choir in 1981 and was awarded the Lower Saxony Artist Scholarship in 1983. He took over as director of the Bach Choir Hanover in 1986.

He was a professor at the University of Music in Würzburg and guest conductor for the choirs of NDR, RIAS Berlin, SWR and the Berlin Radio Choir. For many years, Jörg Straube was director of the Lower Saxony State Youth Choir, which he now supports in an advisory capacity as artistic director.

Jörg Straube has won numerous prizes with his ensembles at national and international choir competitions. His recordings with the North German Figural Choir have received several record awards. With the Bach Choir, he won the Echo Klassik in 2010.
